|Welcome to Escarpment Church
Your Church on the Niagara Escarpment
|Throughout history, high places have had a special sense of holiness about them. Moses
received the Ten Commandments on top of a mountain. The Israelites built their Temple
on Mount Zion. Saint Luke tells us that Jesus spent the whole night praying to God on a
mountainside. Like Jesus, we all have times in our lives when we need to seek solitude,
and recharge our spiritual batteries.
Here in Southwestern Ontario, we have our own special high place: the Niagara
Escarpment, a UNESCO World Heritage Biosphere Reserve. Far-thinking people have set
aside this holy place for everyone’s rest, recreation, and enjoyment. Here, we can step
away from the busyness of our daily world, and enjoy the wonder of God's Creation in
rocks and waterfalls, trees and flowers, sky and lakes. And, if we are especially attentive
and quiet, we may catch glimpses of some of the other creatures who share this place of
wonder with us: chipmunks, deer, birds, snakes, and lizards -- and, of course, insects.
Here, we can take the time to remember that we are part of that Creation, and reflect that in
the Book of Genesis God looked at the Creation and said, “Behold, it was very good.”
